The cork knocker is firm also has 4 cigarette rests but the reason the external trough is good for resting pipes is if you use a glass ashtray and rest a partly lit pipe in the heat builds up and reduces the life of the pipe by burning from outside in , the result a hole in the bottom of the pipe
This one leaves a gap for airflow when the pipe rests ,its not glass so knock it as mutch as you want
